Formula 1 Cars

Auto Union

Auto Union dominated the pre WWII years with drivers like Bernd Rosemeyer. The formula from 1934-37 allowed 750 kg dry weight and allowed this car to have a 16 cylinder engine of nearly 6 liters and developed 510 hp. Ferdinand Porsche designed the first racing Auto Union which was a collaboration between the Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer companies.

Mercedes F1 car of 1936

Mercedes - Benz 1936

The pre-war Mercedes-Benz cars were virtually unbeatable since they were given almost unlimited funds, along with Auto Union, by the German government. The formula that ended in 1937 allowed nearly 6 liters of capacity and the cars produced 630 hp with their supercharger. The formula that ran from '38 to '40 only allowed 3 liters but the German cars still produced 460 horsepower with their two stage supercharger V12s. Cars without superchargers were allowed 4 liters.

Porsche/ Ferrari

One interesting note on this Ivory Coast stamp is that it is labeled "Ferrari", yet Porsches dominate the water color and ink drawing. This is the '61 era Porsche that Dan Gurney drove and won the French Grand Prix with in 1962 before going to drive a Brabham-Climax. Phil Hill and Von Trips took 1st and 2nd in the driver's championship for Ferrari and Gurney placed third in '61, so the stamp is correct there.
